The name of the city
Romanian pronunciation for the name of IASI is Iași [ jaʃ ].
The city was historically well-known as Jassy or Iassy also. It seems that Iasi gets its name from an ancient tribe, the Yassiges, who settled here around 100 BC. But the area had been inhabited for a much longer time, the archaeologists made clear that Cucuteni, a village near Iasi, was the center of a very strong Paleolithic culture.
